Mental Health Strategies
About this Guide
This resource is designed to support practitioners deliver appropriate PSE in conjunction with their learners in light of the Scottish Government PSE Review (2019). This suggested Mental Health Strategies content will support practitioner work with their learners to develop the curriculum to suit their local context and meet the relevant age and stage of development for children and young people with regard to Mental, Emotional, Social & Physical Wellbeing.

Mental & Emotional Wellbeing

Health & Wellbeing

- discuss and demonstrate strategies I could use to make informed choices in stressful/challenging situations
- demonstrate how my physical wellbeing impacts my feelings and explain how these can affect my behaviour
Suggested Learning Experiences
These suggested activities/tasks are for group work within a classroom and target holistic/generic/universal needs of learners. You should select activities/tasks that are most relevant to the needs of your learners and school community. Please use your professional judgement as to how best to deliver these types of activities/tasks sensitively/appropriately with your learners and which other staff may also be able to provide support/differentiation to meet their needs.
What do we know?
How do your learners look after their physical health? Discuss how/why – PE, schools clubs, etc. What about mental health/emotions etc? What do they do or do they know others do? Introduce the See Me ‘What’s on Your Mind’ card & discuss how it might be helpful. Discuss issues such as stigma around mental health/wellbeing and young people and how people might feel if they face discrimination.
What do we need to know?
What is Self-Care and how can we do it? Explore emotions – what emotions do you know? can you recognise them in yourself/others? can they sometimes have different levels of intensity? Do you know that emotions can be expressed in different ways? How do emotions change – through out a day/week, in different situations etc? For example, 5 ways of wellbeing Discuss the 5 ways of wellbeing leaflet – do you already do any of these things? How do they make you feel? What do we do in school that links? What else can we do? not feeling guilty about putting yourself first – self care Some examples of self-care strategies learners could try in class – mindfulness, visualisations, meditation, yoga, journaling, Apps such as NHS Well Mind, Calm, Headspace, Mind Tynseside Mood Tracker etc. what are Talking Therapies, how to look after mental wellbeing, information from MHF Scotland’s StressLESS resource in the Download section along with information in the External Resources section.
